Front cover design progress 2

Here is another verion of my draft music magazine were i have used the founts orange jucie with a pink on black tint to it as the blue i had used before didn't stand out as well when you looked at it from a distance.

Here is what the magazine looked before, and you can see that i have moved the masthead from being tilted to going across the top so it stands out more and is more easy to read. i also had to make all the sell lines bigger so make them more clearer to read.

for any idea that i could do to improve my magazine, i would love to hear feedback.

Drawing my masthead for my magazine

I decided to use Remix as the title of my music magazine as it fits in with the pop theme that i want to portray. Here I decided to use illistrator to draw my masthead for the cover. useing the brush tool I was able to create this which i through was a good way to attract my target audience being teens. this is because the way that the title looks messy and not symmetrical gives it a younger feel to it; but it I used a clear symmetrical masthead fount it would appeal to the older target market. by trying to draw my masthead I have challenge conventions.

Under the masthead I have the logo which i tried to make which looks like a radio. not really related to the pop theme but I may use it in the contence page as I have the main header instead of what in the mag/contence page I have tuning in for- were the raido would fit perfecly in there as you have to tune your radio right to get the sound.

Here is the masthead on it on with out the logo. As you can see I have a little person when at the time I just randomy draw him there but now that im looking at it; the little man represents maybe a person at a concet listening to pop music. Orgianal the colour of the title was black but I changes it to blue as its my fav colour but also made it light blue rather that dark blue as this can appeal to girls and boys at the  same time.

Conculsions

Even though I spent a lot of time on this and I really like this; when I put this on my magazine with the main image the masthead didn't stand out well among all the other magazine. which is why I won't be useing this im my final magazine.

Here is my frount cover, as you can see on the left hand conner you can see that i have attemted to draw out my masthead. unfortuntaly when you put the hand drawn image on the picture the masthead didn't really stand out that well. i choose to exsperiment with the hand drawen background to challenge conventions and also to attract my target audience with the messy masthead instead of a structure on which would appeal to the older target market. Instead of the drawen masthead I decided to use the fount orange peal; with a blue on dark blue border.

I have as a coverline ''Charrlotte pops back into the charts'' links to pop theme. ''behind the scence with katy perry, what jessie J did next?'' I used these artist because they are normally related to pop. At the bottom of my magazine I have an excusive bar says the magazine has interviews, reviews, compititions and free posters to attract my target audience (teens)

I have the bar code in the bottom right conner so it easy to scan on a supermarket scanner. above the barcode I have the price of the mag and the issue num. (£3.99/ issue 1)

Here I decided to play around with the fount colours useing pink and yellow as this in my reasearch was used most in pop magazines. I have the solgan ''tuneing in the best of pop every mouth straight to you'' This grabs your attention and may help improve the chances of you buying the magazine.

Used the fount Orange peal for the masthead. I have also chosen the name remix as my magazine title. This is because it fits in with the idea of pop.

Here the image with the hand drawen masthead and even though I went  on photoshop and got rid of all the white bits it still looks unprofessional and dosen't really stand out that well.

I have choosen to use this pic of Charlotte as a placeholder image untill I re-shoot I might have her doing the same pose but with a pop outfit instead.  I like this image as it fits well on the page and isn't blury.

First time takeing cover photos for my magazine

Here are my photos from my first ever photoshot for my music magazine. As you may find when looking through these images that most of them are blured or out of foucus. This means that i may have to re-shoot. I choose to take the pictures from my college as it was easy for everyone to accsess and get to; the place also supples all the lighting and camera equiment. The person I have choosen for the frount cover is the girl (Charlotte) with the girl she was really photoagentic just the clothes didn't give the impression that she was a pop star and some people said she looked like a new reporter. Were the boy (James) could be used in the contence page was also photoagenic but same again didn't really ware the right type of clothes. So if i did this again I would make sure that the people wore pop relate clothes and instead of the guitar i would have a micphone.

Call sheets and Photoshoot plans

As you know I have to do a photo shoot for the front cover, contents page and double page spread of my magazine at the moment I have a temporary front cover pic which I need to change as the lighting was a little bit to dark and the model I have choose didn't ware the right clothes to give of the impression of a pop magazine.

However I have a plan were I am going to invite a friend who I think look the deal of a pop star. However this also didn't work so i found someone in my college who looked the part to be my model. with actually having the person I am going to have a prop of a microphone and a guitar for the mis en scene of the image. I have also sorted out the lighting in the TV studio which means I have somewhat sorted out the problems of before. I just need to shoot the photos and get a wide range to allow me to pick out the one that I can use in my front cover, contents and double page spread.

I know from doing this that I may have to change my front cover again but I hope that from doing this I will have a stronger image than I do now.

Here is a call sheet for my magazine :3 explaining when and were my photo-shot will take place and what to ware.

Ok so here is my amazing drawing of a birds eye with of the place in-which my photo-shoot will be. as you can see the room is big enough and is quite empty so the risk of a trip hazard is very low. with all this room in the room there is enough room (tongue twister) to move things round with ease without having any accidents.

OK so why and I doing the photo-shoot from college in the TV studio well its easy to access and has all the equipment like lighting, camera and props already there which means I can get everything I need by just asking someone instead of calling the whole thing off because of bad lighting or forgetting to bring the props. form doing the photo-shoot in the college, there is a local feel to it and I don't have to pay for a photography room out so it will be cheaper.

Here is the TV studio which I will have the photo-shoot in. As you can see there is a green screen at the back which will help when it comes too photo shopping the image. The room is quite big which is good as it give me room to create a scenes for my picture.

As you can see there are many studio light which will help with making the image not look too dark like some of the images were last time.

This is the set up that i was thinking of using for my photo-shoot and with the light overhead I think I will have enough light for my pictures.

This is the other side of the light box which I can turn around to get the black side or the white side depending on the picture background I want.

More studio lights and a big light box which again will help with having the image not to dark. I just have to be careful that the image dose not become over exposed. With these light they should flash when I pressed the capture button on the camera.

I will have to bring the person in as they don't live locally which means I have to plan her travel arrangements before hand so I don't have problems like last time with the person not turning up as I need to get the images by next week to get the magazine done in time.

I picked the other model before as i though she would fit the style of the magazine but Upon taking the images and putting them into my magazine she just didn't fit the pop theme; And the lighting was a bit dark and the camera was taking the images blurry. this however dose not mean that I will not use the images; I just need to find a place for them somewhere else in the magazine.

Contents page, Double page, Front cover sketches

Here is one of the skeates I drawed for which I could use for my title page. I have decided to challege conventions and have my masthead going down the side instead of going across the top however to pull this off I need to find a fount which will fit both the target audince of my magazine and the style of my frount cover. Looking back over this image I can see that its quite busy for a frount cover.

Here is my idea for the contence page were I have decided to incorporate the frount into the contence page which isn't used that very offten. The way I want the articles on my contence page to be set out like a postit note board, which shows through my target audience- which is students.
Here is a plan for my double page spread which I think is nicely set out with the right image this could work. Maybe I could add an image which would go over the two pages as many double page spread don't do this.
Here is another front cover useing the same going down masthead. This front cover is not overcrowed which makes it nicer to read on the eyes.
Here is another contents page which dosen't have the frount cover in there.

Proposition- what I want my music magazine to be about

I have been give the task to make a music magazine and my proposition is that I make a pop magazine this is because from doing a little research I have found out that there aren't that many pop magazine around but they are many rock and hip hop magazine around when I have go around supermarkets. Only seeing 1-2 in among 10-12 rock magazine. Now this tells me that maybe pop isn't in high demand as rock magazine; even my questionnaire told me that people wanted rock;  But I still want to make a pop based magazine. this is because there isn't that many in the current market; this means I can look at whats out there and follow the conventions in some way and see where i can try and challenge the convention a bit that it flows well. Were if I did a rock magazine I would feel that all the ideas are already done and I wound just follow the convention.

here is a link to some facts about teen magazine sales http://www.magforum.com/glossies/teen.htm

I want to aim my magazine at female teenagers in a C2 democratic- working class this is because I don't want my magazine expensive or to be filled with adverts like AB based magazine but I want reviews and interviews, celeb gossip and competitions thrown in to grab the attention of my target audience. I have chosen this target audience as im a teenager myself and i think that if you want to target a teenage audience you have to be a teenager as who know what a teenage wants better than a teenager.

With the articles I think im going to look at the artist on the pop music magazine and use them in my magazine as then I know what the audience wants and if it works for the other magazine it should work in mine.

With the double page spread I was thinking that I could have one big main image and have the text wrapping around it just to have something different to other magazine. However if this doesn't work I think I will have an image that goes over the pages but have room at the bottom to allow me to write the articles. I can also have an image on one side of the page and a full page full of text. I think I may need to draw out my ideas and put them on Facebook and Twitter and ask people and see what the audience says.
